Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his plan to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, despite months of public tension between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Just last month, Adams had strongly criticized the former governor, labeling him a “snake and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent statement, Adams changed his position, announcing he now plans to support Cuomo in communities where he holds strong support.

“It is crucial to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have experienced urban displacement on how important this election is,” Adams commented.

He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those areas and get them motivated.”

Race Dynamics and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been shaped by the struggle between Cuomo and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has attracted attention internationally and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.

During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee his conservative opponent declared they would reject Adams’s endorsement if extended.

Months ago, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.

During a separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams answered journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which took place immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
