The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.
A brand new six-part series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."
The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived this week.
Fresh Obstacles for The Team
Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.
However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."
He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
Show History
Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Stephen Graham.
The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.
The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no plans for further series.
Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
